I arrived in the United States with the words of my mother still whispering to me be confident, remember your talents, and remember your family in Japan. The words ebbed to silence as I stepped off of the airplane, and the ground was not solid; it shifted beneath my feet as my head lifted slightly off my shoulders and spun around. I was not sure that I had made a safe decision. I was to check into a hostel in Los Angeles and sign up for LA City College. A bus let me off downtown, and I walked into the metropolis and disappeared into the concrete buildings and strip malls. I disappeared even unto myself. Who was I without my community, without my family, without my first language? Well, after 2 years of intensive study, meeting friends, professors, and professionals, an educational and professional plan for my life has emerged, a plan that includes my culture and includes my talents of computation, communication, and dedication: earn a B.A. in Asian American Studies and a B.A. in Economics and become a financial advisor to an American or Japanese business that specializes in international commerce.
